Climate Action Planning

Carbon Neutrality Commitment and Resiliency Goals

In 2008, the University signed the Second Nature Carbon Commitment to eliminate carbon emissions and integrate climate change into teaching and research. Over the past decade, the system has decreased carbon emissions by 50%. As a place-based institution, UMN is also advancing strategies to build resilience to the changing climate.  Across all five campuses, climate action plans share key resilience elements, focusing on enhancing infrastructure, protecting the natural environment, and strengthening the community, ensuring an ambitious response to the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Progress towards meeting the system carbon neutrality commitment has advanced by:

  • Installing renewable energy
  • Implementing energy efficiency measures
  • Investing in electric vehicles
  • Encouraging sustainable commutes
