Sustainability at the University of Minnesota
Sustainability is integrated into the mission of the University of Minnesota system-wide. This commitment is guided by the implementation of the Board of Regents Policy: Sustainability and Energy Efficiency, which sets the framework for sustainable practices across all campuses.

University of Minnesota Crookston
Highlight: Grant for tree planting on campus in partnership with facilities, faculty, and sustainability.
Impact: Amplifying windbreaks with over 800 plantings planned for Spring.
Next Step: Continued partnership to maintain and manage trees. Implement other strategies in the Climate Action Plans.
University of Minnesota Duluth
Highlight: Full facility modernization of 1971 Main Production Kitchen focused on scratch cooking, employee health & safety, and high-efficiency sustainability.
Impact: The renovation is slated to save 275,000 kWh annually.
Next Step: Refine protocols, infrastructure, and training to optimize food waste diversion.
University of Minnesota Morris
Highlight: Cache energy storage demonstration.
Impact: De-risking thermal energy storage and demonstrating proof of concept for providing emissions free heating.
Next Step: Installation, monitoring, and analysis.
University of Minnesota Rochester
Highlight: Achieved a Silver rating on first STARS report and hired first sustainability student assistant
Impact: Identified areas for improvement and increased student engagement

University of Minnesota Twin Cities
Highlight: Huntington Bank Stadium’s first-ever Zero Waste Event at Farm Aid 40 and again at the Nov 1 football game
Impact: Achieved 90%+ waste diversion, demonstrating Zero Waste is operationally feasible for large-scale campus events and athletics
Next Step: Expand successful Zero Waste event model to future Athletics and University-hosted events
